tim drake In the universe of DC Comics, Tim Drake is the third person to don the mantle of Robin, the Boy Wonder and sidekick to Gotham's vigilante protector Batman. First appearing in Batman #440, the first issue in the crossover arc A Lonely Place of Dying, Tim has been a staple of the DC Universe since the untimely death of Jason Todd (Robin II). On the day Dick Grayson's parents died, there was a young boy in the crowd watching. Tim would forever remember that day, and later use the childhood memory to piece together the dual lives of Bruce Wayne and Batman. After Dick became Nightwing and Jason died, Tim (who was a rabid Bat-fan and follower of the Dark Knight's deeds) approached Dick to convince his idol to take up the mantle of Robin once more because, no matter what, "Batman needs a Robin". Dick, who was happy enough out of Batman's shadow, refused; however, soon the former mentor and apprentice were in peril at the hands of Two-Face, and it was up to little civilian Tim (and stalwart British butler Alfred Pennyworth, of course) to save the day. After this trial, and several others, Bruce finally accepted the strong-willed Tim as the next Robin. Tim was designed to be quite a bit different from the first two Robins. While Dick and Jason were both orphans, Tim had two very much alive parents (though his mother would die shortly into his time in continuity). Tim's father was an affluent member of Gotham Society, versus Dick the Circus Brat and Jason the Street Thief. He relied less on his acrobatic skill and combat moves, while placing more emphasis on intellect, reasoning, and a narrowed focus, much like the Batman himself. In fact, in many ways Tim can be seen as more closely aligned, personality-wise, with Bruce than any of the other Gothamites; perhaps this is why they're prone to clash at times, and mesh perfectly at others. However, unlike the Dark Knight, Tim has a large network of friends and allies. As a former member of Young Justice and current leader of the Teen Titans, he is friends with many of the other teenage superheroes in the DCU. Of course, just how much he chooses to reveal to them is open for debate. Recently, Tim's father died in the summer mini-series Identity Crisis. His girlfriend Stephanie Brown, the Spoiler, also met her demise during the Batman crossover War Games. Both of these events were coupled with Tim quitting the mantle of Robin, then once again taking it up when, as always, he felt he was needed. After such a tumultuous year, it will be very interesting to see where the sixteen-year-old Boy Wonder heads next. Tim can also been seen on the animated Batman series of the late 90s. While slightly different in temperment and past (he more closely resembled Robin #2, Jason Todd), he is Tim nonetheless, and as cute as can be. x | I believe I can change the world |
