The Yuri Lowenthal Teen Genius Compendium
Dr. Serph Sheffield's English voice actor was a bit of surprise -- primarily because I don't think anyone expected Serph to actually talk. Yuri Lowenthal, a popular voice actor, was something of a "hidden" actor due to the secretive nature of Dr. Sheffield's character.
Now, I'm actually a big fan of Mr. Lowenthal's work. It's way groovy that he can speak so many languages, and he's been photographed in a Green Lantern shirt, which is instant cool in my book. But what I was most amused by was the fact that apparently Mr. Lowenthal plays a lot of teen geniuses, some of them as insane as Serph. Let's take a look, shall we?
First, of course, is Dr. Serph Sheffield himself. He's manipulative, he has an evil laugh, and he's a teen genius doctor boy who accidentally throws the world into chaos. What's not to love? Coming in at a cool sixteen according to the That's Catch-22 manga, he fits the archetype perfectly.
Next, we have the prickly Dr. Daedalus Yumeno of Ergo Proxy. The little doctor's age is never revealed, but he is referred to as "very young", and appears to be in his mid-teens. He is also very insane, and manipulates those around him to achieve his final goal -- which, of course, is partly in the name of science, partly because he's just crazy. Daedalus was my favorite character in Ergo Proxy, and I was immediately reminded of him when I played Digital Devil Saga 2.
Here we have a newer character: Hiram Menthe of GrimGrimoire. You'll notice he's yet again another silver-haired genius for Mr. Lowenthal to portray (and he does a great job). Because the game is pretty new, I won't reveal too much about his character -- let's just say he's got kind of interesting taste in women. Oh, geek boys, you just can't be normal, can you?
Now, you may be thinking, "Kelly, Sasuke Uchiha of Naruto is so not a teen genius like the rest". No, no he's not. But he's often referred to as a genius due to his Awesome Amazing Ninja Power!!1, and frankly, adding him here to the "one taco short of a special plate" genius list amused me. Look at that broody little scowl!
Finally, I'm going to give honorable mention to Dr. Derek Stiles from Trauma Center: Second Opinion, who may no longer be a teenager, and he's definitely not insane, but dude, look at him. He like, can't even shave yet. He's also a genius doctor, albeit one that kind of depends on how skillful you are with a Wiimote, but the point stands. He totally would chill with the others, though he'd get a little creeped out by Daedalus and Serph, tell Hiram to "keep doing his thing", and buy Sasuke a soda since he "looked like he needed some cheering up".
Derek: Um, do you like Sprite?
Sasuke: I like killing my brother.
Derek: -- how about Dr. Pepper?
Do you know a Yuri Lowenthal teen genius? Have I missed someone? Feel free to write in, and I'll add the character to the list, credit included. BE WARNED: It might take a while to get your suggestion up. I like to play the games/see the anime/whatever first myself, just to verify, which means I have to finish everything else I'm watching or playing...so be patient, please. :)
THIS JUST IN!: due to an outcry from fans, you can now check out the Yuri Lowenthal Heroes With Moxie Database.
