About the Site

Let’s start with the primary question – what in God’s name was the Fior di Battaglia?

Okay, I’m gonna level with you here. I needed a name. Really. So I thought back to everything I ever remembered from anything, and lo and behold – there was the Fior di Battaglia.

The Fior di Battaglia is an early 15th century Italian manuscript written by a master of arms named Fiori di Liberi. It was called Flos Duellatorum in its first form, but two later surviving editions refer to it by its Fior name. It describes all manner of fighting, from the ‘baser’ sports of wrestling to the noble art of swordplay.

Okay, you’re asking, what does an old Renaissance book about swords and stuff have to do with Larsa? The fact that it’s actually from the early Italian Renaissance (which Larsa was so crafted to identify with) is part of it. Also, he’s a tough little fighter, and excellent with a sword. You don’t want to underestimate him in a battle.

What attracted me to the name, however, was its translation. Roughly, it is equivalent to the English phrase “The Flower of the Battle” or “The Flower of Battle”. That struck me as an extremely accurate way to describe Larsa. He’s tough, he’ll cut you with a sword in a heartbeat if it’s called for – but he’s also gentle, sweet, kind, and compassionate. Better yet, he’s blossoming into a strong young man who will most likely bring his country much glory – without Nethicite, thanks. The name, I thought, just worked.

Finally, it should be mentioned that I don't own Larsa, I never will own Larsa, and this makes me sad. Square-Enix does, lucky dogs.
