Saotome Alto

Seventeen-year-old Alto begins the series as a typical high school boy who just happens to be living on a futuristic space colony. Oh yes, and he comes from a family of famous kabuki actors, which means he often has a cross-dress for the sake of theater. Still, all of that aside, Alto is pretty much what you'd expect from any grumpy teen boy: he's usually annoyed, often snippy, has a rocky relationship with his dad, and really hates being called a girl.

The one thing that separates Alto from his classmates, however, is his love of piloting. Add this to his already strong sense of justice and rather righteous ways, and you have the perfect candidate for boy-hero; and so Alto becomes one. After the villanous Vajra attack his colony, Alto takes up arms and begins piloting for the secretive S.M.S. Squadron. Add a little romance and plenty of griping, and you have a compelling lead. A compelling lead who also happens to be nicknamed "princess", but hey.
